Meeting with Gus Nyberg
On Sunday, September 28th, a group of Tryon Farmers met with Gus Nyberg, the former Land Manager/Steward, Northern Indiana Nature Conservancy, and currently Director of NICHES (Northern Indiana Citizens Helping Ecosystems Survive) Land Trust. The group met for nearly three hours for an informal but very helpful walk-around in the Woods Settlement.
The goal of this gathering was to learn more about how we, as a Settlement and as individuals, can contribute to the appropriate care and management of the woodland environment as it relates to our Tryon Farm living experience. About 17 Tryon Farmers turned out for the meeting, which, despite continuing mosquito attacks, was an informative and helpful discussion about the interactions of trees, flowering plants, and even the weeds that inhabit our woods. It is also hoped that this learning experience can provide some basic foundation for the development of a land management plan that can be applied to the Woods Settlement. Shown in the photo is Gus holding a hickory nut from one of the few hickory trees living in the woods.
